Deb Richardson, an associate professor of nursing, was recently awarded two scholarships to continue her own education.
Richardson, who is pursuing a doctorate in education, was the 2019 recipient for the Georgia Association for Nursing Education Spillman-Bischoff Scholarship, a scholarship for female nurses pursuing graduate school, and the Louise McBee Scholarship, a scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Association for Women in Higher Education and ACE Women's network.
Richardson says she is thankful for the scholarships, but more importantly for the Dalton State faculty and administration. The faculty and administration are supportive of each other and have the best interest of students in mind.
In addition to honoring recipients, the Louise McBee Scholarship honors those who "pay it forward," in Richardson's case, Dr. Barbara Tucker, chair of the Department of Communications. Tucker mentored Richardson during her first year on the faculty.
"She immediately took me under her wing and demonstrated that leading, learning, mentoring, teaching, and doctoral research were not mutually exclusive," Richardson said of Tucker. "She helped me transition from the art and science of practicing nursing to the art and science of teaching excellence."
Tucker - along with Dr. Gina Kertulis-Tartar, dean of the School of Health Professions, and Dr. Pat Chute provost and vice president for Academic Affairs - have encouraged Richardson and supported her along the way. Richardson is grateful for those who "pay it forward" for the betterment of the campus.
With the desire to empower her nursing students at heart, she wants to focus increasing diversity in nursing. Her doctoral research is on the experience of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) students and their paths to registered nurse licensure. She also plans to give back to other faculty members on campus.
